after spending the past few years transitioning away from her former alias

deserts chang, anpu has continued to release astonishingly well-crafted material. her first official single under her birth name anpu, zoea, lyrically seeks to explore shifting perspectives that maturity has granted her on past experiences. named after the scientific name of mitten crabs still in larva stage, the title provides a reference to the central theme the track is aimed to explore. local indie legend and friend sandee chan was invited by anpu to serve as the producer on the new single. its arrangement not only knits a tightly-woven relationship between anpu's voice and the instruments but also creates a narrative for the song that could be described as a fantastical journey. it also incorporates sounds from electronic music, while also sampling environmental ambiance to further add to the song's already impressive imagery.

mitten crabs have long been viewed as an environmental index for assessing the ecological state of rivers and streams in taiwan. the species has a unique spawning migration pattern, which means the crabs spend most of their lives migrating and finding a partner to mate with. though once a common staple of freshwater ecosystems, the species has seen a gradual decline in population over the past few decades, mainly attributed to overharvesting and pollution. as a result, their existence has also faded away in the popular consciousness.

the music video for zoea was crafted to be different from most of its contemporaries which are subordinate to the music. as a joint work with the visual arts team

hi-organic, the video is slated to be the first part of a creative trilogy under anpu’s new production label mulii. The single and accompanying video seek not only to take the viewers on a journey constructed through interlocking visual and audio elements but also to reflect on life and death, and everything in between, with an omniscient perspective.

the narrative for the video comes from the director's childhood memories. it starts in the streets under an overpass, where mitten crabs are being sold by a vendor with red lanterns lining his stand. two mitten crabs suddenly jump out of captivity and escape into the nearby sewers. as the crabs make their way into the city's dark underbelly of water ways, they embark upon a voyage of spawning migration. they cross a terrain of cracked soil before finally reach the deep and enchanting ocean. the video combines both camera shot footage and animation, giving the audience a glimpse of the magnificence of the locales that are often overlooked by humans, through the perspective of the video's eight-legged protagonists. throughout the video, the plot and details weave a narrative that illustrates the infinite metaphors and imagination projected onto life itself.
