the entire production set out to portray how anpu had moved on to her next phase of life. with the title refine, the tracks chosen by her for this concert were also carefully curated to fit the show. she opted to perform covers of what she regarded as “unknown legends”; a selection of underground mandarin classics in the past two decades that she wanted to introduce to her audience.
refine also sought to push the envelope of stage design and visual spectacle. the stage design centered on the use of geometrically abstract cloud formations; this allowed for an ever-shifting and aweing visual experience for all the seating zones, which went on to earn great praise from the audience.
the mandarin characters for the refine concert - 煉 雲, both represent a deeper aspect of the concert. the first character 煉, is often associated with alchemy and esoteric philosophical practices with a literal translation being "to refine" and/or "the extraction of essence". the character was chosen to represent how art is a constant process of reflection and refinement of the artist and his or her environment. the other character 雲, is literally translated into cloud(s), as it was chosen to represent how human beings and their emotions enter and leave each other’s lives.
